The Journey of MEGA
Humble Beginnings
1974 - Early 1980s
Hailing from humble roots in a small town in Malaysia, Kenneth Lim (Founder) moved to Singapore in 1974 and started as an apprentice in a small cane furniture shop. He worked there for about 6 to 7 years, learning every aspect of the craft -- from materials to construction to finishing.
Even as an apprentice, Kenneth had a keen eye for what the market needed. He urged his boss to diversify by adding staining, offering more designs, and increasing the variety of furniture they offered. His ability to draw and translate customer ideas into illustrations set him apart early on.
The Golden Era of Cane Furniture
Early 1980s - Mid 1990s
Kenneth struck out on his own, opening a cane showroom and importing from the Philippines and Indonesia. He also offered unique designs combining wrought iron with cane weavings. The late 70s to early 90s was the golden period for cane furniture in Singapore -- expatriate families were moving in rapidly and cane furniture was in huge demand.
As a made-to-order company, MEGA became well known in the expatriate market. At its peak, the business had four showrooms throughout Singapore. In one instance, 10 expatriate families from Intel ordered all their furniture to be made by MEGA.
Adapting Through Crisis
1997 - 2000s
By the mid-90s, the cane furniture market was slowing as countries like Indonesia and the Philippines began exporting directly to Europe. Then the 1997 Asian currency crisis sent the regional economy into a tailspin. With overheads of almost $80,000 per month and business taking a nosedive, Kenneth faced his toughest moment.
But he refused to give up. In 1998, MEGA took on a completely different approach -- pivoting to contract furniture, upholstery, custom orders, hotel furniture, F&B, and institutional supplies. Decades of hands-on experience in making furniture gave Kenneth deep knowledge of how every piece -- from a dining chair to a sofa -- should be produced. That knowledge became the foundation of MEGA's new direction.

MEGA Today
2000s - Present
Today, MEGA Marketing & Services is led by Shawn Lim, Kenneth's son, who now serves as the company's Director. Having grown up around the workshop and learning the trade from his father, Shawn carries forward the same commitment to quality that has defined MEGA for over five decades.
Under Shawn's leadership, MEGA continues to serve both residential and commercial clients -- from homeowners to hotels, restaurants, and institutions -- handling everything from sofa reupholstery to custom banquette seating and children's play area padding. The philosophy remains unchanged: do the work well, use quality materials, and make sure you're satisfied with the result before it leaves the workshop.
